Sitting in Whakarewarewa Forest, one of the oldest exotic forests in New Zealand, the area was originally planted in the early 1900s. Of the 170 different species planted, only a handful remain today including the 6-ha stand of Californian Redwoods. It wasnt until the 1970s that the forest was opened to the public for recreation, and since then it has become the soul of the city attracting more than 600, 000 visitors a year.
This is the location of our award-winning, eco-tourism walk which is suitable for families and accessible for all who can walk unaided. We also have purpose-built baby strollers available free for guests to use.
The award-winning, eco-tourism walk is 700 metres long, spans across 28 suspension bridges, 27 platforms and takes about 40 minutes to complete. With the height of the walkway ranging between 9-20 metres, you are presented with a unique, birds eye perspective of the forest below and treetops above.
Take the immersive 40-minute nature discovery Daytime Treewalk as you discover 118-year-old giant redwood trees, get a unique birds eye perspective of forest floor and treetops above, see extraordinary views of New Zealand silver ferns and exotic forest.

What is the Redwoods Nightlights and when are the lights turned on?
At night, 30 David Trubridge designed lanterns and 40 colour spots and feature lights illuminate Redwoods Treewalk for a totally different and unique nocturnal experience. The night lights are turned on each night around dusk.
Can children and infants treewalk?
Children and infants cannot be carried at any stage along the Treewalk, either in front or back carriers, in an adult’s arms or on shoulders. However, we have four baby trolleys available. These are available on a first come, first served basis and are free of charge to use as part of your Treewalk admission. The strollers can be used by infants 2.3 – 10 kg in weight and 48 – 74 cm in length. Two adults must operate the baby stroller (front and rear). However, our friendly team members are happy to help if you’re visiting solo.
